TO OUR NEW PATIENTS

On your first appointment with us, you will receive a complete and comprehensive periodontal examination and oral cancer screening. All findings will be shared and thoroughly discussed with you.

You don’t need a referral to see a periodontist, and you can choose to go directly to one. During your first visit, your periodontist will review your complete medical and dental history with you. It is very important that you inform your periodontist if you are taking any medications or being treated for any condition because it may affect your periodontal care. Your teeth will be checked to see if they are loose. Your periodontist will use a small measuring instrument (probe) and place it between your teeth and gums to determine the depth of spaces known as periodontal pockets. Your gums will also be examined to determine whether there is gum line recession.  X-rays may also be taken to observe the health of the bone below your gums. If you have had recent x-rays taken at your primary referring dentist, please make sure to bring them to your appointment so that your periodontist can complete the assessment as soon as possible.
We schedule our appointments carefully to prevent our patients from waiting, as well as to avoid any rush on treatment.  In some instances, we will need to meet with our patients more than once.  These additional visits will be scheduled to discuss in depth findings, diagnosis and proposed treatment, options, etc. Additional visits typically are done at no additional charge.

Referral for a Periodontal Problem:
Periodontal disease accounts for over 75% of all adult tooth loss in the United States. If you have been referred to our office because of a periodontal problem, it is likely that your periodontal infection has progressed beyond the mild stage. Please set up your appointment at your earliest convenience.

Referral for Dental Implants:
If you have been referred to our office for a dental implant evaluation, we will determine whether you have adequate bone for placement of the dental implant (s), and make appropriate recommendations on nutrition that will optimize the success of your treatment.  Dr. Carpio has been working in the field of dental implants for over 10 years.

Patients with certain medical conditions may be asked to pre-medicate with antibiotics prior to their dental appointment. We do this with your safety in mind. Please inform us if you have a condition that might need pre-medication.

Pre and Post Treatment Instructions:
Before and after treatment, home care and medication instructions will be thoroughly reviewed.  You will be given these printed instructions for your convenience. Regardless, we are always available for any questions you may have.

Patient Education:

Patient education is a major component to our approach to treatment.  It is very important that you be completely informed on your condition, and that all treatment options have been explained to you. We spend a great amount of time in patient education, and make sure that our patients understand what is their next step in treatment.

Patient Comfort:

During dental procedures we make a special effort to ensure that our patients feel as comfortable as possible during any dental procedure.  Our office has not had the need to use sedation, but if you prefer this option for your treatment, please inform your periodontist and we will make sure to make the appropriate accommodations for this.
